In 2021, NYC HPD selected Type A, BronxWorks and L+M to develop River Commons on a 26,000 square foot site in the South Bronx. The development will include approximately 325 affordable and supportive homes, over 15,000 square feet of high impact community facilities and outdoor space, and an activated streetscape along River Avenue. BronxWorks will provide on-site supportive services and operate the BronxWorks Empowerment Center offering robust community programming including health and wellness classes, fresh food access, afterschool and summer camp programs, innovative family-centered initiatives, eviction prevention, financial counseling and workforce development and employment services. Located in the heart of the city’s highest concentration of African language speakers, the project will also be home to the African Resource Center where the African Advisory Council and African Communities Together will provide education programs, social and legal services and community meeting space to NYC’s growing African community. This 250,000 square foot energy-efficient and resilient development will be built to Passive House design standards and feature a landscaped public plaza and large scale public art.
